The Schools and Young People's Health Team, Health Development Agency
17th January 2003:
Invitation to apply for the pilot phase of the programme - 'ContinuingProfessional Development: certification of community nurses to support PSHE (including sex and relationship education)
Following the successful completion of a similar pilot for the certification for the teaching of PSHE for teachers last year the Health Development Agency, on behalf of the Department of Health and Department for Education and Skills, is ready to begin the development of a programme for community nurses (e.g. health visitors, community midwives, school nurses, family planning nurses). This pilot will follow a similar process and capture the experience and learning from the teachers' work.
The aim of this programme is to develop a structured standards framework to enable community nurses to become PSHE specialists, which will highlight and promote the particular knowledge and skills they can bring to this work, identify evidence based practice and maximise the added value of their contribution.
The pilot will run for one year from April 2003 and will involve one group of five community nurses in each of the nine Government Office Regions supported by a NHSS Local Healthy Schools Programme Coordinator as the local lead (i.e. a total of 45 nurses supported by 9 local leads). Individual nurses will use a draft standards framework to evidence good practice supported by their local lead through local learning networks.
As with the teachers' work, this will be a genuine pilot allowing the experiences of those participating to shape the development of the final programme.
We are now in a position to invite applications from interested NHSS Local Healthy Schools Programme Coordinators who would be able to lead a group of community nurses in the pilot.
National funding will be provided to fully support this programme. A budget of £5,000 will be allocated to each pilot group, managed by the local lead, to support local learning networks and training. Additional travel and cover costs for attendance at national events will be reimbursed.
How to apply
If you would be interested in applying for the above pilot please read the required criteria and guidance for local leads (both documents attached). If you are satisfied that you can meet the criteria and fulfil the requirements of the role of local lead, please send your application (using the format described in the criteria document) to Neil Oliver at [email protected] <mailto:[email protected]> copied to your NHSS Regional Coordinator.
The closing date for applications is Wednesday 5th February 2003. We hope to have made the final selection by 21st February 2003. Also attached is a copy of the current information sheet on the programme which has been widely distributed.
