Mother to Mother Research Project

Centre for Paediatric Epidemiology

This is a joint research project between Guys, King's and St Thomas' Medical School - Department of General Practice and Institute of Child Health. The research has many other collaborators including Lambeth, Southwark and Lewisham Health Authority/Health Action Zone and the Perinatal Epidemiology Unit in Oxford. The other main centres in England are HAZs with some sites in Scotland. The start up phase will be in Lambeth, but active work with the other cetnres will also be started over the next year. The programme for the mothers is based on the La Leche League Peer Mothers which train local mothers who have breastfed to support other mothers in their communities. It is successful in the areas where it has been used but no research has been carried out to ascertain how and why it works - hence the trial. The training and support for the mothers will be done bt health visitors and midwives who are attached to general practices.
