National initiatives achieved in the first year of the Diabetes National Service Framework include an NHS Modernisation Agency programme of support for local staff, the establishment of national Diabetes Workforce Group to develop workforce planning and a Diabetes Information Strategy. But Dr Sue Roberts National Clinical Director for Diabetes says in a report ‘National Service Framework for Diabetes One Year On’ that a lot of work still needs to improve variable standards of care. ‘Pockets of excellence are common but that excellence is not universal,’ she says.
