CPHVA welcomes MSF/AEEU merger vote

The overwhelming vote by the memberships of MSF and the AEEU to create a new mega-union has been welcomed as "a really positive opportunity" for healthcare professionals by the Community Practitioners’ and Health Visitors’ Association today (Monday, 2 April).

The CPHVA is an autonomous professional section of the MSF union, representing 18,000 health visitors and community nurses. The CPHVA director Jackie Carnell said: ‘In the new union, there will be a strengthened health sector with additional resources for providing labour relations and professional services for the membership.’

‘In a world of increasing globalisation, it makes sense that organisations representing working people merge to create a stronger voice to speak on their behalf.’

‘The NHS is going through a period of rapid transition and our members will need a powerful body to promote their interests and those of the client groups they serve on a daily basis.’

MSF has 65,000 members working in the NHS and the AEEU 15,000. The two unions will operate in tandem until 2003 when they will become a fully integrated organisation.
