Health Visitors to hold Open Forum on New Nursing Council
Members of the Community Practitioners’ and Health Visitors’ Association will have the opportunity to chart the way forward - following concerns about the formation of the new Nursing and Midwifery Council - at an open forum in London on 6 October.
The Executive Committee of the CPHVA took this action following calls from 21 of the 157 Association’s centres concerned about the lack of the name ‘health visiting’ in the title of the council.
The CPHVA’s director, Jackie Carnell said: ‘This will be a good opportunity for the CPHVA Executive Committee to outline the many steps that have been taken to safeguard the role of health visiting as a profession on the new council. And it will give representatives from the centres a chance to contribute to the debate. The Executive Committee will welcome the views expressed and take them into account when it formulates future strategy.’
The Executive Committee unanimously decided to opt for an ‘open forum’, instead of a more formal special general meeting requested by the centres, on the advice of its Standing Order Committee. Some of the centres had not complied with standing orders in terms of being in quorum and officially recording the meetings.
Ms Carnell said: ‘Nevertheless, the Executive Committee recognised that, as a democratic organisation, there was a demand for a full exchange of views on this sensitive issue. It was felt that the forum was the best method to hear grass roots opinion. This should be a positive occasion where we can chart a way forward.’
The difference between a special general meeting and an open forum is that a special general meeting has policy-making powers.
The forum will be held at the TUC Congress building in Great Russell Street, central London on Saturday, 6 October. All 157 centres have the opportunity to nominate a representative to attend the forum.
