- new understanding domestic violence pack launched by CPHVA

At a time when an estimated two women a week are killed by their partners in the UK, the Community Practitioners’ and Health Visitors’ Association is launching its Understanding Domestic Violence training pack which explores the extent of the phenomenon.

The pack is designed to enable community health workers to improve their skills so they can provide more effective support to families affected by domestic violence, by encouraging clients to talk about the abuse and assisting them in seeking the optimum solution.

It is estimated that 25 per cent of women experience domestic violence.

The pack, initially funded by Department of Health, and produced by the CPHVA, provides multi-disciplinary material for trainers to run three one-day workshops.

While primarily designed for health visitors and community nursing staff, experienced trainers may find parts of the pack suitable for other audiences, for example, pre-registration students.

CPHVA director Jackie Carnell said: ‘This training pack will become the standard and an essential tool in understanding the appalling nature of domestic violence in the UK and providing a framework for client-led solutions.’

To coincide with National Breastfeeding Week 14 - 21 May, the CPHVA has published a revised edition of its popular A Beginner’s Guide to Breastfeeding.

It is the ideal booklet for NHS trusts wishing to spread the ‘breast is best’ philosophy and for health visitors conveying vital reassurance to new mothers.
