CPHVA considers holding Special General Meeting on new Nursing and Midwifery Council
The Community Practitioners’ and Health Visitors’ Association is considering holding a special general meeting in the autumn, so that members can voice their concerns about the formation of the new Nursing and Midwifery Council.
Members have been concerned about the lack of the name ‘health visiting’ in the title of the council and a number of motions from CPHVA centres have been received relating to this issue.
The CPHVA’s chair, Pauline Pearson said: ‘We are a democratic organisation and take the views of the membership very seriously. The Executive Committee has asked the Standing Orders Committee to ensure that those putting forward the motions have followed the correct procedures. If everything is in order, we will hold a special general meeting in the autumn.
A call for a special general meeting needs support by 10 centres from five of the 14 CPHVA regions. The motions we have received claim support by 18 centres from 10 regions.
However, the Executive Committee would like to express its concern that these motions were not presented to the CPHVA’s regional committees, which is the first stage in the democratic process. While Executive Committee members have been aware of the range and diversity of members’ views relating to the new council, nothing formally has been presented at regional level.
The CPHVA has been making strong representations to government about concerns we have regarding the new council. The CPHVA director, Jackie Carnell had a recent meeting with health minister John Hutton and we have also urged our members to write individually to the Department of Health, the Chief Nursing Officer (England) and MPs on this subject. So far, more than 300 of our members have written in support of the CPHVA’s stand.
The CPHVA is an open and democratic organisation that actively encourages membership participation and that’s why the Executive Committee has agreed to explore holding a special general meeting.’
