The Community Practitioners’ and Health Visitors’ Association today (Friday, 27 October) welcomed the Department
of Health announcement that 10,000 more nurses will have prescribing powers as "a long awaited, but very positive
step forward".
It will eventually mean that school nurses and practice nurses will join their health visitor and district nurses colleagues in prescribing drugs for certain categories of treatment. For example, school nurses will be able to give emergency contraception and practice nurses drugs to alleviate asthma and heart disease.
The CPHVA’s Professional Officer for Practice Nursing, Rosemary McQuarrie said: "We have supported – and worked closely with - the Department of Health in the moves to widen prescribing powers to a greater number of community nurses."
Ms McQuarrie urged community nurses to make their views known before the consultation period ends on 10 January 2001. If all goes to plan, training for the new categories of community nurses will start next September.
