More than 20,000 community nurses are being surveyed on how extensive ‘the epidemic of bullying’ is within the NHS.

With research showing that 20 per cent of the UK workforce is bullied at work at some stage, the Community Practitioners’ and Health Visitors’ Association and the Mental Health Nurses Association want to know the extent of the problem for their members.

Karen Reay, the Amicus/CPHVA regional officer leading on the survey, said: ‘Bullying is an epidemic – it is dangerous, it is widespread and often it goes undetected until it is too late. It makes people’s lives a misery and often the perpetuators of bullying get away with it.’

CPHVA/MHNA members have until 15 August to reply. The results will be analysed and form the basis of a session on bullying at the CPHVA’s annual conference in Harrogate in October.

Gail Cartmail , the Amicus Head of Health, said: ‘The results will be used as a springboard for further campaigning work in the NHS with the aim of making employers and managers take this issue more seriously. We want stronger structures in place so that this insidious phenomenon is stamped out.’

‘We are investigating conducting similar exercises for other professional groups within the Amicus health sector.’
