Parenting Courses

Fleetville Family Support Centre, St Albans, Hertfordshire

With funding from St Albans Early Years Forum, Health Visitors and Fleetville Family Support Centre staff provided courses for parents of children aged 0-6 years using Family Caring Trust materials.

Aim

The aims of the courses were:
" raising parent's self-esteem
" enable parents to communicate better
" enable parents to develop a growing sense of responsibility in children
" promoting effective nonviolent discipline
In addition to Family Caring Trust, course material called 'Handling Children's Behaviour' from NCH Action for children was also used.

Evaluation
The evaluation conducted in 1996/97 was positive. Changes in approach with positive effects on behaviour and family relationships were reported.

Almost three years on this interagency service is available to parents of children up to 10 by referrals coming mainly from health visitors, social services and schools.
