Parenting Groups run by health visitors in Arsenal Locality of Greenwich

Evaluation

Due to the lack of funding for premises and crèche workers for groups run by Greenwich health visitors, groups have been run in partnership with local council day nurseries, nursery schools and Welfare Parents and Children's Centre, where a crèche has been available.

The groups have been facilitated by health visitors in partnership with staff from the above organisations, including a social worker and nursery officers.

Aim
The aim of the groups has been to promote the development of positive nurturing parent/child relationship by helping parents to increase their understanding of their child's development and behaviour, and to learn ways in which they can an encourage the child's social, emotional and physical development, with particular emphasis on encouragement, positive attention, and active listening.

Participation
Each group has lasted for a total of six weekly two-hour sessions, and there has been the option of a refresher day three months later. Discussion and group members participation has been the main focus of each session, with videos, and worksheets used as triggers for talking points.

Evaluation
Following each course, members have been asked to complete a short evaluation form. Results from this are generally encouraging, with parents expressing a desire to have more time to talk about particular issues, including management of difficult behaviour, and play activities. Negative comments have to do with the video used and the group having insufficient time to deal with all issues raised.
